Hell Starts at The Gate
A man wakes up in Hell--naked and intertwined with a hundred other terrified human beings who have also just arrived. After fending off a gang of demonic men and rescuing a beautiful woman, the nameless main character fights his way through a crowd of billions, heading for the only rumored means of escape. With each passing moment, his wits and his sanity are pushed to their limits as he begins to realize that the inhabitants with whom he shares his damnation may be more dangerous than the devil who sent him there.

The Gate by Michael W. Layne is a concept of Hell I haven't read in any other story (and I've read many stories featuring the infamous inferno). The author draws readers into the accursed cavern of eternal suffering with a detailed accounting of the murderous ritual the main character performed to ensure his own damnation. Even knowing the atrocity carried out prior to his arrival in Hell, it's surprisingly easy to feel sympathy for the man who remains nameless and almost cheer for him at times. The character appears to be an atheist, which makes his journey all the more interesting as he resists the proselytizing from those who believe they can still redeem themselves. The descriptions of the people surrounding the character transcend time and location, appearing to represent the whole of mankind from our first creation to the end of our existence. Observing people continuing their battles over race and religion provided an excellent backdrop to the main character's inner struggle to accept his place in the afterlife.
While there is some redundancy here and there, I strongly recommend The Gate to anyone who enjoys a thought-provoking story.

The Gate edition by Michael W Layne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Crocodile Dundee meets Thunderdome?, I guess is how I'd describe it. However you want to label this book two words have to be used. Damn Good. Now let's go on a walkabout. We may even wind up at The Gate.
Very interesting line of thought on the end of all things for those that do bad or nasty in life. I'm glad I read it and will want to read it again someday down the line.
This was another one of my Halloween finds - and it is still free for anyone who wants to go check it out. It was a good story and I liked it, but as with the others that I found this year, I didn't find them scary. It truly was a learning experience for the main character and I would check out other things written by this author. I loved every page, just wish there been some scare to it.
What a story from the beginning it is a extreme feeling of terror! You may think you know where this story is going, believe me it has a twist that is unexpected..... ENJOY!
I do like stories set in Hell, it is fertile ground for storytellers. This novelette has a different take on what happens when one lands there. A imagining of the malevolent deceptions that could exist in Hell. I read this story as a palate cleanser between longer novels and did enjoy it. Moderately recommended.
This story was startling and engaging, which kept me hooked until the end. I found myself asking questions of long-held notions, and the only way I was going to see if I got answers, was to get to the end. I loved that about this story - you kept taking turns and twists and every time I thought I understood what was going on, I had a new curve-ball thrown at me. I am a big fan of Sci-Fi and usually find myself reading huge volumes, which take a long time to develop. However, despite this being a short story, I felt that the characters and the message were rather nicely fleshed out (pun intended!); you felt for them, you found yourself wishing you knew more about them, and you questioned some of their thoughts and choices. Overall, the story was thoroughly entertaining and engaging, and I look forward to seeing what Mr. Layne comes up with next!
I have done a lot of things in my sleep. I have talked in my sleep. I have walked in my sleep and maybe even talked and walked at the same time in my sleep.
But I wonder if I ever laughed in my sleep? If I did it would have been over a happy dream that I was experiencing.
In the book The Gate, the story starts out (without saying) a nightmare situation. I would have been really turned off against this because horror is not my favorite genre. But because of the way this book was written, with the mix of tongue&cheek humor, it had me laughing from the get-go! It was like laughing my way out of a nightmare. For every turn were serious events of woe and gore *ending up in hell, what would you expect*, yet there were little tinges of offbeat humor to chuckle off as the journey continued. And I do mean journey. A journey that had me turning page after page; remember, I am not a horror book reader. I guess for those who are into the horror genre, they would have rated this book a five star.
What also contributed to my rating of this particular book was the writing. Skillfully written in the first person narrative; and believe me, I have seen so many author's attempt this, and the results were less than dreadful.
So I will say this, I gave the writing and humor a four star. The story? I figure it just tagged along for the ride!
I look forward to seeing more from this author.
